On my 66th birthday, my son David and his wife Jennifer left for an expensive Mediterranean cruise, leaving me a laminated chore list instead of a birthday wish. I stood in the house I owned outright, reduced to unpaid help while they treated me like a servant.<\/p>\n

Three years earlier, they had convinced me to move into the garage apartment so they could live in my home, promising a \u201cpartnership.\u201d Slowly, that partnership turned into exploitation. I handled childcare, housework, and maintenance while my authority and dignity disappeared.<\/p>\n
