The biker sitting across from me on the subway was crying. Not just tearing up\u2014full-on sobbing into a tiny orange and white kitten pressed against his chest. His leather vest was covered in patches, his hands were scarred and rough, and his beard was streaked with gray.<\/p>\n

He had to be at least sixty-five, maybe older.<\/p>\n

And he was completely falling apart. Everyone else on the train was pretending not to notice, doing that typical city thing where you look everywhere except at the person having a moment.<\/p>\n

But I couldn\u2019t stop watching. There was something about the way he held that kitten\u2014so carefully, like it was made of glass\u2014that made my throat tight.<\/p>\n

The little thing was purring so loud I could hear it over the rumble of the train.<\/p>\n

The woman next to him\u2014overdressed for the subway in a business suit\u2014kept glancing at him with disgust. Finally, she stood up and moved to a seat further down the car, shaking her head. That\u2019s when the biker looked up, tears streaming down his face, and said something that made everyone within earshot go completely silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said to no one in particular, his voice breaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just\u2026 I haven\u2019t held anything this small and alive in forty-three years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody said anything at first. The train rattled on through the tunnel.<\/p>\n

The biker wiped his eyes with the back of one hand, still cradling the kitten with the other. It had its tiny paws pressed against his chest, kneading his shirt, completely content.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what made me do it, but I moved seats.<\/p>\n

I sat down next to him. \u201cYou okay, brother?\u201d I asked quietly. He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and let out a shaky laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.<\/p>\n

Not really. But I think maybe I will be.\u201d He stroked the kitten\u2019s head with one finger.<\/p>\n

\u201cFound this little guy in a dumpster outside the hospital. Just sitting there in a cardboard box, crying his head off.<\/p>\n

Couldn\u2019t have been more than a few weeks old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou taking him home?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have a home,\u201d he said simply. \u201cBeen sleeping rough for three years now. Lost my apartment when I couldn\u2019t work anymore\u2014bad back, messed up knees from the bike accident.<\/p>\n

But yeah, I guess I\u2019m taking him with me.<\/p>\n

Can\u2019t leave him to die.\u201d<\/p>\n
