My name is Wanda Calloway. The day my family reminded me where they believed I belonged, Portland was raining softly, as it often does in October.<\/p>\n

I dressed carefully for my sister Rebecca\u2019s baby shower\u2014navy wrap dress, pearl earrings, hair done just right. I told myself I was going because I loved her. That had always been enough reason, even when love wasn\u2019t returned the same way.<\/p>\n

The shower was at an upscale restaurant downtown\u2014crystal, linen, curated perfection. Across the street sat O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s Pub, warm and unpretentious.<\/p>\n

The old instinct to shrink rose in me. Instead, I said, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

And I left.<\/p>\n

The rain felt honest compared to that room. I crossed the street and stepped into O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s\u2014warm light, wood, laughter, the smell of onions and beer. Real.<\/p>\n

James O\u2019Sullivan was in a booth, papers spread before him. He\u2019d been a regular at my bookstore for months\u2014never condescending, never dismissive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, he\u2019d made calls. A stylist arrived. I changed into a deep blue dress that felt like myself, not a version edited for approval. When I stepped into the pub\u2019s private dining room, a long table waited\u2014simple, elegant.<\/p>\n

At the center: a place card.<\/p>\n

Wanda.<\/p>\n

Not an afterthought. Not a footnote. Just my name.<\/p>\n

Three respected business leaders joined us\u2014women and men who had been trying to reach me for months about consulting work, partnerships, and a private library project. Messages my mother had \u201cforgotten\u201d to pass along.<\/p>\n
